If you have ever slipped off a ring and found a green band underneath, you have not been sold a fake. Jewelry turns skin green because the metal in the piece reacts with moisture, salts and mild acids on your skin, leaving a thin deposit of copper compounds behind. The mark is a surface stain, it washes off with soap and water, and it is almost always harmless. Whenever any of these sits against skin, the copper meets oxygen, water and the chlorides in perspiration, and slowly converts into copper chloride and copper carbonate.

Those compounds are green. They are the same substances that give old church roofs and weathered statues their pale green coating. On skin the layer is microscopically thin, which is why it rubs and rinses away rather than soaking in. It is worth stressing that the reaction is chemistry, not a defect. A piece can be genuine sterling silver, properly hallmarked, and still leave a mark.
